Gorgeous 70-inch TV gets perfect Wii-shaped hole

It’s Christmas morning in the Mann household in Wisconsin, USA. Santa has brought the best present of all - a rare-as-hen’s-teeth Nintendo Wii - for the children to share and enjoy. In preparation, the family has bought a whopping 70-inch rear projection TV for their front room. As we predicted, this family didn’t wait for their replacement straps to arrive…

Wanna see that again… in close up? I thought so.

Karlee Mann (14) sat by while her cousin Bryce (also 14) dominated the initial few games of Wii Sports Tennis. When Bryce finally gave in to her protests, the heady mix of frustration, adrenalin, anticipation and family rivalry proved too much. In an instant the remote slipped from her hands, the weak Gen 1 strap failed to catch the escaping projectile, and the Mann’s $4500 TV took a clean bullet to the head. Oops.

If I could have bottled the atmosphere in the front room at that moment and shared it with you, no doubt there would be a sick feeling at the bottom of every readers stomach. You can laugh about a broken bulb, a few grazes, even a dent in the wall, but $1150 damage (as mother Dona has been quoted) is not an easy one to swallow. Credit to the family, who collectively shrugged at their misfortune, got out their old 17″ CRT and got straight back to the tennis!

that stinks, but i mean cmon, how do you let go of the controller playing wii sports? you barely even have to swing the wii mote to play any of the games, i just think that a little more commen sense could of been used in this situation.

I have examined the wiimote and realized that the back plastic has a smooth matte finish, easy to slip out of sweaty excited hands. The straps had been beefed to twice its former size and is stiff. I don’t think these straps will break easily.

Plus, calling people stupid for these accidents is unfair. It could happen to anyone! It has happened to people who formaly believed that it could’t happen to them.

I make sure my son has the strap on his wrist and have it tightened up as much as possible for it to still be comfortable. He’s left go of the remote at least 3 times, and it’s just fallen down next to his hand on the strap.

Nintendo said that the first gen straps passed all of their stress tests. I personally have a Wii, and I know that you really, really have to put power into it to break that strap. I’ve joked around and threw my Wiimote many times into nowhere, and it never broke once. It may be an accident, but one that could’ve been easily avoided.

OK so when is a 3rd party company going to get smart, and stick it to these morons who get too involved in their games? All some company needs to do is sell a “Lexan Wii TV Shield”. This would be a pice of Lexan (Bullet proof material) and brackets to mount it to your TV. It would be clear so as not to interfear with your viewing pleasure, but would be immune to the slipps of the WiiMote.

I think that someone should develop a clear shield that comes up when you play your wii. This way, if it flys out of your hand, it hits the shield and not your $4500 TV. I have a 62″ DLP, and this is the one reason I’m not buying a Wii. I’m confident I wouldn’t do it, but I could see over zealous friends doing it. Any thoughts?

Why are some of the posts on here so unintelligible that it hurts me to even try to read them? How about if we learn some English, then come back here and talk like human beings, instead of using whatever language that is that you’re using that doesn’t make ANY damn sense? Anyway, I know that accidents happen, but CLEARLY this person wasn’t thinking about the fact that they’re not the one that actually bought the expensive ass TV, and therefore they don’t have any sort of appreciation for said TV. For the love of… You people that keep having it fly off because of bad straps have no excuse because it’s only been floating around in the media for awhile now. And the sad thing is you can barely flick your wrists and get the same results as going crazy on it. And it just sickens me how many people are blaming it on the wii because they let go of the controler and it broke something. If I have something in my hand and I’m fake throwing it I realize that it can fly off even if theres a strap holding it. And being upset doesn’t mean crap because the only difference is the wii you use the remote to move it around, if any other console was like that people would throw xbox controlers all over when they get shot playing halo. And all the big hulky testosterone men that are playing, caaaaaalm down your not gonna rank in the ladies when you beat your friend in wii bowling. Congratz to all of you who broke your tv’s and rings, this is going to be a GREAT learning lesson.

2) A $4500 tv? I blame that on the parents. Not very good with spending their money. Tell me you’re super rich, and I’ll shut up. But if you’re middle class, and you spend $4500 on a tv, then you must really not know how to handle your finances. I’m guessing they just ate up everything the salesperson fed them and didn’t do research on their own. Question: Do you really need a $4500 tv? Is it practical? Geez.

To really do THAT to a TV (average TVs included)and be rich (or publicly humilliated as a real idiot):
1) Weaken the strap
2) Lose (on purpose if needed)
3) Make a tantrum like a little kid
4) Throw the wiimote to the TV with all strength and might god has put in your arm (previously fitted wiimote with a white coloured steel encasing to prevent braking it upon impact)
5) Blame on the strap
6) Make a lawsuit to Nintendo Of for defective straps.

At Wikipedia.org, if you examine the article they have on Wii, you’ll find lawsuits against Nintendo. Including about the “defective” straps.
