Closet door gets the Wii badge of honor*

Patrick is fortunate enough to have a dedicated games/movie room in his house. No ceiling fans and overhead lights, none of the usual living room clutter, perhaps not even a window, so you might think he was set up with the perfect, Wii-friendly pad. If this story tells us anything, it’s “Where there’s a Wii, there’s a way”. (sorry)

This is what happens when Patrick invites his 4 friends round to try his new Wii.

The game is Wii Sports Tennis and Greg has the racket. As a newbie, he is getting totally absorbed in the game. With one huge cross court smash the Wiimote leaves Greg’s hand, caught only momentarily by the wrist strap (which does the inevitable) and flies full pelt into the closet door.

You’ll find a close-up of the damage after the break.

Hole in door #2 The close-up reveals a somewhat flimsy looking door, with a distinctly Wiimote-shaped hole in it. But to complain about the door quality is not really fair - you can’t expect “Closet Doors Inc.” to have flying Wiis as part of their toughness test regime (though if this trend continues, they may. There could be a good market for certified Wiiproof(TM) furniture).

When all the laughter had died down, Greg was sent off to clear up the mess, and the rest just carried on playing. What’s a little damage between friends?

This story reminds me of a similar Wiimote run-in with a TV. There was no lack of opinions with that one, so scientists and physicians, pencils to the ready and explain this one please!

*For our European readers, the title should read “Cupboard door gets the Wii badge of honour”. I know it’s similar but we don’t want any confusion around here now, do we?

Please, someone just has to tell the us-people that they have to HOLD the wiimote (as any other console controller in the world) in their hands and not release them while playing. That doesn´t count if your Name is John McEnroe and you´re playing Wii-Tennis, LOL!!!

Ah and i forgot to ask… what kinda doors do you have ovher there?! Made of paper? I´ve never seen before such crappy doors, no wonder your houses are flying away when there´s a tornado.

o_O I love the Wii and this site. I enjoy looking at stupidity every now and then. Also, I must agree, that door looks pretty thin, but I have some vinyl doors that are just as thin. But whatever.

Uhm, its a normal, hollow core, inside door, regulation height and width for an inside door by the looks of it, they are made of two sheets of particle board, about 5 mm thick maybe, and inbetween, as a filler, usually strips of cardboard placed perpendicular to the wood. I don’t think the point of the story was to be dumb about his not-as-thin-as-you-think-it-is door, but that he must have thrown it really hard to make such a nice sized dent in there. I don’t have a Wii, but if I did, I’d be screwed, I have a window right behind my TV, luckily though, I have a solid door, so I’d be good there.

That’s just a common door. I wonder what kind of idiot would put hard solid wood doors on the inside of the house.
Anyhows, Nintendo should start offering some real hard straps… maybe cuffs would do the trick. I have someone that went into a shop to get a pair of cuffs and with some 1337 modding the Wiimote will never fly away. Can’t avoid a black eye, but either that or a 500$ TV in the garbage.

Ha ha! I just downloded the Wii browser, so I came to my favorite site first! Btw, I have an old strap and every thing is in tact! (to whoever commented about houses in the US flying away during tornadoes, you must be fron Europe, here in the US, we can (and do) get tornadoes with winds of 450mph (not sure how man kmh that is))

I am not exactly a brilliant tennis player but i never realised you let go of the ‘racket’ when you hit the ball? I can understand letting go of the wiiremote when you are bowling or something but when playing tennis???

i don’t understand what is wrong with you people? you are supposed to hold on to the controller……….. i’ve played the thing without a strap and haven’t had any problems with it flying out of my hand and breaking something.

C’mon people… i mean really, who actually lets go of a controler while playing… don’t blame it all on the wee Wii, whos fault is it that they cant keep a controler in their hands while playing a videogame?
