TV skewered by Wii remote

Wii in TV #1

This is unbelieveable! I think the photo says it all. I’m waiting for some confirmation from the original poster of this image to verify that this actually happened during a revved-up game of bowling and will add to this later with more pics. In the meantime, let us know what you think in the comments!

Update: I’m confident that this is 4 real! We’ve had direct contact with Dave Hodges, who was there when it happened. He watched his friend Tyler do something to his 27″ CRT that RCA’s customer service department will probably never have seen before or since. He tells the story in full after the jump, and provides 3 more photos which will still leave you wondering “Is that really possible?” or make you fall off your chair laughing.

I wanted to know if that Wiimote really ended up stuck in the TV, or whether it had cracked the casing and the hole was made to improve the photo cred. Dave responds from West Virginia, USA:

“It did indeed end up stuck in the hole. Tyler is right handed but usually bowls putting a clockwise spin on the wiimote, this time he put a counterclockwise spin on it… lesson learned? Stick with what works in the first place! The great part is we pulled it out, laughed some more, replaced the batteries and backplate then continued to play (only in a milder manner this time around). We’re trying to figure out how to make a comfortable/stronger strap right now.”

Wii in TV #2

Phew! We learn a few things from this little story:

1. It really is possible to do damage to an old fashioned tube TV (see updated stats on TV damage).

2. When over a million people are playing the same game, unlikely things can happen.

3. The Nintendo Wii Remote is virtually indestructable (we’ve yet to see a remote die despite all this slinging around)

4. Wii Sports can be very very funny. Did Tyler get a strike? Dave: “I cant remember if it was a strike or not, I was too busy laughing. I was crying my eyes out, along with the three other guys in the room.”

Anyway, here are some more photos.

  1. I dunno about this one, the case on the TVs I would think would be harder than that, especially around the screen. I dont think the remote would jab in like that. Would be funny if that be the case.

  2. Haha, believe me, I was there when it happened. The TV plastic is brittle it seems, it punched a section right out, which you’ll see when the rest of the photos are added.

    Comment by Dave Hodges — December 5, 2006 #

  3. Bullshit. The impact marks on the television plastic do not line up with the position of the Wii remote. It’s obvious the crack on the tv was made by an object that had a horizontal piece. The Wii remote had no parts that could make such an impression on the plastic wall.

    Comment by Hector — December 5, 2006 #

  4. Swear on my life the Wii remote made the hole. We pulled it at first, then replaced it to take the photos a day after. The crack was made by the wiimote slamming into the TV hard enough to punch a hole… The plastic appears to be thin and brittle, ever thrown a TV? It shatters! Ever thrown a Wiimote at a TV? It punches a hole…

  6. […] But, wouldn’t there then be damage done to the WiiMote, at all? If you can post a short video of you pressing around the edges of the hole to prove the plastic’s brittleness, then I will believe it. The only reason that I am skeptical is because of the other WiiMote damaged TV set prank pictures.

    Comment by Matt — December 6, 2006 #

  19. So, how do you explain the severe damage to the TV stand right below the hole?

I suppose the Wiimote leapt from the hole, smashed the table and then bounced back into the hole in the TV frame…

More likely, the TV and stand were damaged at the same time and Nintendo of America had no part of it.

  37. Haha, this is hilarious. This is the first experience I’ve had with “blogging”, and there are some very opinionated people out there. All I did was share the four photos with a few friends. I’m glad you all have the need to berate my friend for a pure accident, question my integrity because you know anything and everything about the physics of an airborne wiimote/structural integrity of an RCA TV shell/and the dynamics of plastic when hit with a projectile. I’m happy to say I have one of the funniest gaming memories firmly lodged in my brain, and will continue to enjoy this incident everytime I pick up the controller. Thanks for posting!

  38. I could see the remote spearing into drywall or going through a window. But through the case of the TV is a bit far fetched

    Comment by Jon — December 6, 2006 #

  39. Look at the plastic, you can tell by looking at it, that the shell of the tv is made from very inferior quality of plastic, very thin, that grainy type texture degrades it even further and would be pretty easy to break.

The outer shell serves no purpose on those types of tv sets, other then to make it look less like a frame with a cathode ray tube.

I have a tv that looks not too dissimilar, and the outer plastic can be flexed with a little pressure from your finger or thumb. This is especially aparant when picking up the tv and moving it.

  43. Hmm, this just goes to show you how well Nintendo builds its products. It’s almost reminiscent of the famous “Gulf War GameBoy.” While the Wii may be rather wee in terms of size and technical specifications, its design, price, engineering, controllers, utility, and first-party games are first-rate. While it may not have the software library of the X360 or the graphics mojo of the PS3, Nintendo can make a profit off of every Wii sold and hold its software prices down (for the time being.)

I highly doubt that Microsoft and Sony controllers (my friend had perpetual trouble with broken analog-stick centering springs) could stand up to anything like this without failure.

(Or it shows how cheaply RCA manufacturers have been building their sets for the past couple of years. Grandma’s old 27″ RCA from the mid-nineties has held up extremely well.)

To Sony/Microsoft fanboys lacking in intelligent criticism abilities: Maybe I should comment on the quirks of your systems, such as exorbitant prices, low availability, dearth of quality games, poor hardware design, and a nagging tendency to convert unfortunate users into simple, foul-mouthed page vandalizers who care little for the viewpoints of others.

  48. I’m a big critic of Nintendo, their new controllers and think the nonstop Sony bashing is ridiculous. I also think the Wii will wind up being #2 or #3 after a couple of years, but even so… I do not buy this at all.

You can see a heavy crease or dent running horizontally across the puncture which likely caused the original crack or break in the plastic. I could see the Wiimote going INTO an existing crack or hole, but there’s no way in hell it punched through there like that. Not enough mass and you’d have to fire it out of a cannon to produce an impact like that - the physics just don’t add up.

Anybody posting these kinds of stories either 1) is stupid or 2) just wants some attention.

    Comment by Slick — December 7, 2006 #

  58. This is entirely possible. Someone COULD fake it, but anyone who says this is IMPOSSIBLE should atleast wait until they graduate 8th grade before thinking they have a handle on basic physics.

The plastic around an RCA television is absolute shite, especially the front, which offers no structural support- meaning absolutely NO incentive for RCA to reinforce it. You can probably put a pencil through it with enough force, so the weight of a Wii controller with batteries is certainly enough.

The obvious question you need to ask yourself is, “why the hell would someone fake this?” …If you have an answer to that, you’re probably just so pathetic that you wish you had thought of it first.

    Comment by DM — December 7, 2006 #

  70. Maybe there should be less of a question of wether or not this is fake, and more of a questioning of nintedo’s ability to make a reliable strap. They make their Wiimote projectiles of doom indestructible but they sure as hell dont seem to spend much time on ensuring they stay in ur hand.

Also now we see the fault in letting nerds play actively… they dont have the necessary motor functions to do anything other than button pressing. Go to the gym a little and improve your grip before you play Wii again.

    Comment by Andris — December 7, 2006 #

  71. Ooooh isn’t DM quick-witted? I detect skepticism, but just to elaborate, my attic is a full room that happens to be used for storage, and I wasn’t swinging like a wild man, but I took a few decent shots at the tv and it didn’t crack open, and it was sort of bouncy. Based on my experiment, the wiimote, with enough force, could possibly have broken the plastic, but not the way it is depicted here. I didn’t believe this for a second, and the word “gullible” comes to mind for people who believe these frauds. They’re getting exactly what they wanted from all you people who actually think its possible, and really, who gives a shit, but I thought your post was a little too smarmy to ignore.

…if you had to fake it.

    Comment by still Unreal... — December 8, 2006 #

  82. Pictures are evidence. They may not be -proof- because they can be faked, but considering how they (naturally) didn’t have a camera rolling when it happened, what else can they do to prove it?

There’s no proof that it happened, but unless we get a physicist or crime scene investigator to analyse the photos, there’s nothing to disprove it either.

If you’re SO CERTAIN that it’s a fake, prove it. Give us an explanation of why it couldn’t be real that is compelling enough to prove (beyond reasonable doubt) that it’s fake.

Without that there’s no real reason to dismiss it. Believe what you want, but screaming “fake” doesn’t lend you any credibility, either.

It’s a post for shits and giggles. i found it laughable even more so that so many people stand so strongly that it has to be a fake. The guy isn’t trying to scam a new tv or sue Nintendo. he’s just sayin’: hey look and the dumbshit thing that happened to me. haha, isn’t it funny? It made me chuckle especially after seeing the kid who got smacked in the face with a wiimote and it left a welt on his face.

  95. I think this isnt fake at alll
Today I threw this empty gum back at my bro, and it left a HUGE dent in my wall.
Seeing as the wii remote most likely outweighs the gum pack ten fold, i see this as a very likely scenario for the tv to have the plastic on the TV front break like that.
And for all of those that think its fake, grow up, just because ur in some junior high class doesnt make u king of the world yet.

  97. Surely a fake. On the right of the “hole” there are scratches that surely aren’t originated from the hit of a Wiimote. Someones needing some fake attention here. That’s all. Boring.

    Comment by Raven — December 11, 2006 #

  98. Lol @ any nerd you would break their TV/window/wall/sibling just to get some attention… by people they can’t physically talk to and see.

If these cases are genuine, why are people throwing their controller at their TVs? Does it slide out of your hand or something when you swing or whatever?

Also, can people stop putting me off getting a Wii please! :P

DM - A physician is a doctor. A physicist, however, would be able to determine whether or not the wiimote could have stuck in like that. Nice try, but don’t be daft.

  100. nah.. not true..

    Comment by J — December 11, 2006 #

  101. Speaking as some one that has done many TV repairs over the years (no longer TV repairs and only doing computers now) I can easily believe this. The main structural integrity for most larger TV sets is only needed in the base area and even then since large TV’s are rarely moved, they don’t require strength of the same calibre as things that are portable and meant to take a lot of abuse. Also the thing about most anything that always seems to hold true, the cheaper it is to buy, the cheaper it has been built (aka you get what you pay for). Many of the lower end TV sets have been manufactured with very brittle plastics that brake very easily.

Now about the guy with the golf club….If you smacked an old 1970’s console TV with a club it WILL do some serious damage, and if you hit the screen directly with it make sure to use eye protection at the very least because that screen (which is MUCH stronger than the plastic on any modern TV) will pretty much explode…So you’re not telling the whole truth when you say you tried that (politely said).

I’m fully expecting some one to flame me on this so to stop just a few of them before they say I am full of sh**, I’m do not use xbox, ps anything or wii. My girls have a wii system though and looking at the controllers, they seem pretty dang strong, which is nice because buying replacements constantly gets annoying. It would easily do some serious damage to something more brittle that the more dense and flexible plastic used on the wii remotes.

  102. Fine i lied

    Comment by Dave Hodges — December 12, 2006 #

  103. I don’t think you lied at all. As i said above, the wii remotes seem pretty well made and sturdy. That combined with some one goofing off and deciding to see how hard they can make a ball go down the lane (something people do all the time on real bowling lanes) could easily punch through the tv plastic on todays tv’s. Heck, back when i was still doing tv repairs I saw all sorts of things stuck through the plastic housings on tv’s. Things like a pen one time, couple pencils, a fork, a wooden ruler and my personal favorite, a barbie doll stuck through the side head first up to the middle of the torso. :)
The ultimate though were some friends of mine that had a small studio that produced a show called “Son of Ghoul”. They were always looking for fun dumb things to do and regularly did bowling for tv’s. Set a tv on the floor in the studio, throw bowling balls at it.

    Comment by Nemo — December 12, 2006 #

  119. […] [Via Didjitalist] elien | Zuletzt bearbeitet: 14.12.06, 15:04 Tags: Fundstücke, Extremsport   « Verkalkuliert         ecam (offline)   Suchen: […]

the paramedic would be at her arm for either comfort or taking her pulse and other necessities which they tend to do when people are injured..

im not gonna call fake or real, because i honestly couldnt care less.. but, it does look quite feasible to me.. i think some people are in denial about things, and what has been mentioned many times before..

with over 1 million people playing the one thing, theres gotta be bizarre things that happen.. look at car crash websites, people manage to get themselves in the oddest places.. in this case, people can get the oddest injuries doing the simplest things.. all the different factors around you mixed with the number of people can lead to some pretty bizarre stuff!
For the person who mentioned Heels with jeans, i see it alot… who knows, she could have been on her way out somewhere, and decided to play this with her brother while waiting for her boyfriend to come pick her up..?

  123. No way did a Wii remote make a hole like that in the TV frame. It would bounce off before a hole like that was made. Even if it did make a hole i dont reckon it would be as big as that. However i dont think what game is on, or the fact it looks as though its the first frame of bowling is any kind of evidence its fake. Random things DO happen but i dont think the laws of physics would allow the remote to penatrate the plastic. Still if it is fake, WHY would you want to fix a wii romate breaking youre TV you sad g*ts. Get a life.

With nintendo making and shipping more wii’s all over the world on top of already selling more than ps3 all your bickering regardless if it is true or false it is helping people to decide whether to buy a wii or not.

    Comment by nxbad — December 15, 2006 #

  126. For those of you saying this is fake you have never seen these fly, i could easily see this going through the tv and taking very little or no damage. A friend and i were playing baseball when he released the remote mid-swing, strap broke and it put a nice dent in a nearby wall from its near 100 mph flight remote still worked fine after. Hurled with enough force this things could probably do about as much damage as you driving a golf ball into your tv.

    Comment by stormcrow — December 15, 2006 #

  127. This is obviously a fake.

First: The remote flew out of the guy’s hand, rotated a quarter turn to the left in mid air and then cracked through the plastic?
    What, like a screwdriver?!?

Physically it is *impossible* for that to happen, I don’t care how weak the plastic on those TV sets are, the remote appears to have striken the TV set just where the plastic is bent on the edge, and plastic molded into a bent shape is pretty rock solid. I bet if you took a hammer you could make a hole like that, but you *would* have to use force in order to make it.

Also bear in mind that contrary to walls and LCD screens (which the latter is easy to dent), there is nothing but air behind the plastic so where a wall and LCD screen would be unable to absorb the impact and thus be dented, the plastic is more elastic and would be able to absorb the impact into the air behind it and the remote would simply bounce off.

Yes you could drive a pen through it because the tip of a pen represents such a little surface compared to the force needed to drive it through plastic, but the ‘tip’ of the Wii remote represents a surface area hundreds of times bigger. Like pixelator said, you would need a cannon to produce an impact like that.

Oh and by the way, if the remote made that hole, and they pulled it out and put it in there the day after to photograph it, why did they remove the battery cover and batteries?

    Comment by Lerxst — December 15, 2006 #

  128. By the way, when enlarging that picture (the one where the remote is removed), to 200%, you can see that on the right of the hole, there’s a vertical, rectangular rather long dent which appears to be visible just to the left of the hole as well. Are you saying the Wii remote made *that*?

You guys damaged your TV with something, and used a sharp object (knife or whatever) to cut that hole. That’s what you did.

    Comment by Lerxst — December 15, 2006 #

  129. OMG people should learn to read more… “How can you play without a battery??” They took the picture the next day sweet heart.

And how are they are still together I have no clue, but it has all the makings of an action figure. It has melt action, and extreme battle damage from a flying ashtray into the tube, yea, mean chip out of that. And do you realise how hard it is to break any other television tube? I once threw a brick at a TV(dont ask) and no damage to tube at all, but RCA… a cheap ashtray chipped the tube. Yea, RCA’s, built like crap… thats why if you’re on a budget, you can finance you’re entire entertainment system with RCA at ease at your local Wal-mart, lmao

  144. This is great. Thanks for the photo. The photo and the comments are really entertaining.

I can buy that this could happen.. but I’m skeptical that this one did without some effort.

I’m guessing the strap broke during a gameplay session. The guys thought that was pretty funny, so they wondered what would happen if the remote hit the TV. One shot to the TV bounced off the glass. Another shot made the horizontal impression on the plastic. After a few more tries they managed to lodge the remote in the TV, similar to what is shown. I’d buy that more than the chance shot that the remote flew, strap broke and made one shot to put a hole in the TV. And yes, I believe Dave did just intend to show off the photos to his friends and didn’t realize how widespread this would get. I’m sure he’s beside himself with utter joy and humility.

Then again.. a million units and countless stunts like this, I could be wrong.

  157. First of all, a master of physics is not a physician, it’s a physicist. Second, the Wii is only in competition with the PS3 in terms of viable hot-item Christmas gifts and time spent entertaining oneself, they do not compete in graphics, etc. Last but not least, the molded plastic around every TV is very durable, so unless your TV was made in America there are no “shit” TV cases. There’s only one way this would be possible and that’s if there was a significant pre-existing structural crack in that exact area. The front of the Wii remote is flat people. Even if the case was weak, the remote would have made a much larger hole compared to an object that was pointed and you don’t have to be a scientist to fully realize the physics of that. If the remote hit the TV on it’s corner then it would not have had the blunt force needed anyway, the remote would have received the majority of force from the impact in that case. (You must also consider that the plastic gets much stronger at the corner of the TV.) Every console has it’s good and bad aspects, and it doesn’t matter if the photo is fake, it’s the extremist left or right responses that are what’s wrong with the world.

  172. this is an obvious fake, i have experamented with this one guys, i used the handle that broke off a knife and was hitting a similer tv in the same place, it broke but needed a hell of alot of force and several attempts, no way could you throw a wiimote to do that damage!!! (the knife handle is still in tact and made from some kind of hard stuff, must be harder than a wiimote.)

I’ve seen a mate of mine throw playing cards into a plaster wall and this seems a lot easier than doing that, as long as the tv casing is brittle enough.

    Cool picture anyway.

  190. That’s hillarious man. I love it. I can totally see that happening. I mean, taking into account the (a) visible thinness and estimateble weakness of the plastic, (b) the estimateble weight of the controller, (c) the VERY estimateble enthusiasm with which the controller was thrown, I can believe this and greatly appreciate the humor in it.
lol, all these comments have driven in me a desire to perform my own “mythbusting” test just prove all the “FAKE!” screamers wrong.

Then it was my turn, so when i started to pull my hand back and then go forward with my hand, the romote wii flung out of my hand and whent right into the tv screen leaving a BIG scrack in the screen and made like a spider web. now its gonna cost 135 dollars to replace the front of the tv.

  233. For the love of… You people that keep having it fly off because of bad straps have no excuse because it’s only been floating around in the media for awhile now. And the sad thing is you can barely flick your wrists and get the same results as going crazy on it. And it just sickens me how many people are blaming it on the wii because they let go of the controler and it broke something. If I have something in my hand and I’m fake throwing it I realize that it can fly off even if theres a strap holding it. And being upset doesn’t mean crap because the only difference is the wii you use the remote to move it around, if any other console was like that people would throw xbox controlers all over when they get shot playing halo. And all the big hulky testosterone men that are playing, caaaaaalm down your not gonna rank in the ladies when you beat your friend in wii bowling. Congratz to all of you who broke your tv’s and rings, this is going to be a GREAT learning lesson.
